The Touptek EP3CMOS06300KPA camera is a deep sky photography 'expert', but is also a universal 'talent' for all other astronomical uses. A Sony IMX178 chip and 6.4 megapixel resolution provide you with brilliant colour photos any time you wish. The CMOS sensor is equipped with modern technology, providing higher sensitivity at extremely low noise - your beautiful photos will be good enough to hang on the wall.

The all-round camera for deep-sky and guiding, with 6.4 MP resolution

The Touptek EP3CMOS06300KPA camera is an expert deep sky instrument, but can also be used universally for any other astronomical object. A Sony IMX178 chip and 6.4 Megapixel resolution deliver consistently brilliant colour photos. The CMOS sensor is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, providing superior light sensitivity and extremely low noise - your best shots will be more than good enough to hang on the wall.

The advantages in a nutshell

  • high-sensitivity and low-noise CMOS sensor
  • rolling shutter for fast and brilliant images
  • perfect for deep sky exposures and guiding
  • high resolution and large image field of 3096x2080 pixels
  • 2.4ìm pixels - ideal for high-precision guiding

High-performance CMOS sensor with 6.4 megapixels

The heart of this camera is Sony's IMX178 sensor. It functions using STARVIS and Exmor R technology, which make exposures of faint nebulae possible in previously unimagined ways. But what is behind this? - the special technology involves a back-lit sensor with extremely high sensitivity and less noise. Your exposures provide extremely clear images that are rich in detail. In contrast to conventional sensors, the photodiodes are completely free of any shadowing - that all means more light is available and you will be able to expose faint astronomical objects in a shorter time. The extensive 14 bit dynamic range means you will benefit from enormous contrast, making your deep sky objects uniquely beautiful.

Better photos thanks to the rolling shutter

The CMOS sensor is equipped with a rolling shutter. The image is globally exposed, but every line of the chip is rapidly scanned so light continues to reach the pixels. This increases the sensitivity, reduces the noise of the image, and makes image exposures faster.

State-of-the-art CMOS sensor with higher sensitivity

The heart of this camera is a new sensor from Sony using STARVIS and Exmor R technology which makes it possible to capture images of faint nebulae in an undreamt of way. But what is behind this? The special technology employs a back-illuminated sensor with extremely high sensitivity and producing less noise. Your exposures benefit from a clearer picture with finer details. The photodiodes remain completely free of shadowing, in contrast to ordinary sensors. That means that more light is available, allowing you to use shorter exposures for even faint astronomical objects. You also benefit from a level of contrast that shows your deep-sky objects beautifully.

Better pictures thanks to a rolling shutter

The CMOS sensor is equipped with a rolling shutter. The image is not recorded completely in one go, but one line of the chip is recorded at a time, while light continues to reach the other pixels. This also increases the sensitivity, reduces image noise and makes image acquisition faster.

Included in the package - image acquisition and image editing software

Extensive software is included - with virtually everything an astrophotographer could wish for:

  • Live Image function
  • exposure settings
  • histogram
  • image acquisition and video functions
  • automatic Dark Subtraction
  • time-lapse image acquisition
  • image processing - stacking

Virtually everything you need is included in just one program, allowing you control of most of the image processing.

System requirements:

  • Windows 7, 8 or 10
  • Intel Core 2, 2.8GHz, 2GB memory, USB 2.0

Along with the camera, the drivers and cables required are included - to complete this convenient package.

Customer reviews

I lost 2 days trying to make it work. On windows 7,8,9 and 2 different computer. The drivers do not work or camera is faulty. I read some reviews and I heard that other peoples have this issue. I will return it.

Not for linux

Warning: Do not buy this camera for use with Linux!

I bought this camera because it was one of the few where Linux was mentioned under supported operative systems.

I ordered the camera mid Februar, it was shipped the very next day, and I had it within a week. Quick and efficient.

The box contained the camera body, an 1.25" adapter, USB 3.0 cable and a software CD.

The camera body is of solid metal, of high quality machining.

Naturally the software on the CD primarilly is for Windows and Mac, but it also contains software for Linux.

The installation is a bit wierd as the usual distribution systems isn't used, instead the installation is a script containing a large blob. The installation must be run as administrator, and the root account must have a home directory (on my KUbuntu this was not the case, and the installation crashed).

The installation does not add an icon to the desktop or application menu (it does create an icon on the none existing root account's desktop).

The software on the CD did not detect the camera, neither did the software downloaded from the ToupTek home page.

ToupTek responded quickly to a mail, and sent me a link to a new version on Dropbox. Unfortunately this version crashed on startup, so did the two next versions.

For the last month ToupTek have not answered any of my mails.

The specifications for this camera is great, and I would love to try it on M3 or Saturn, unfortunately I do not have anything running either Windows or Mac, so for now I have this expensive paper weight!

Again: Do NOT buy this camera for use with Linux!
