Glossary | Telescope accessories | Capacity | Type | Grey filter

Also known as a neutral density filter. For reducing the glare from bright light sources such as the Moon, Jupiter and Venus.

While many Moon filters are actually colour filters and therefore colour the observed object, with a grey filter the natural colours remain.

Fields of application are the observation of the Moon and bright planets. In both cases, the contrast is increased and in the case of Venus, the phases are, for the first time, visible. Another application area is the observation of double stars, in which one component is significantly brighter than the other.
