Microscopy

Microscopy is a fascinating tool that plays an important role in upper secondary biology education. By using microscopes, students gain insights into the world of cells, tissues, and microorganisms, and develop a deeper understanding of the structure and function of life.

Biology lessons typically begin with an introduction to microscopy. Students learn about the different types of microscopes and receive instruction on the proper handling and maintenance of the equipment. They learn how to prepare specimens and observe them under the microscope.

Microscopic drawings are used to record and document observations. Students learn how to use microscope accessories and practice examining dry specimens such as cork, hair, feathers, and insect wings.
They also gain experience with wet mounts, for example by observing protozoa in a hay infusion or in activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant.
