Microscopes for veterinarians

Veterinarians use a wide range of microscopic analysis methods. Besides cytology, histology and parasitology also play a major role. The microscopes must therefore be flexible in their conformation. Here are some tips for configuration. Many microscopes come with 4 good achromatic objectives as standard: 4x, 10x, 40x and a 100x oil objectives. This already gives you the most important basics for coping with the diverse tasks required for veterinary diagnostics. Certain staining solutions are often used to evaluate blood samples, tumours, and other cell material. Thus, normal brightfield microscopy is at the centre of the analysis methods. By closing the aperture diaphragm, colourless structures or organisms such as parasites are much more clearly displayed against the light background. Therefore, these microscopes should be equipped with an aperture diaphragm.

Contrast-enhancing methods such as dark field microscopy or phase contrast techniques are also quite interesting. However, the latter technique can also be simulated by changing the condenser position (set lower) and the diameter of the aperture diaphragm inside the condenser. By closing the aperture diaphragm, colourless structures or organisms such as parasites are displayed much more clearly against the light background. LED as a light source provides the necessary colour temperature consistency - regardless of the brightness setting.

An interesting aspect of the question of the right microscope for veterinarians is also their transportability. If the diagnostics work is carried out not only in the laboratory, but also in the field, it is not uncommon for size, weight and optional battery operation to play a role in weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of individual microscopes. Practical transport bags and cases are also on the list of possible options.

Microscope versions with a camera output for an optionally available camera are useful for documenting reports.
