An Amici prism is used for upright and true-side observation with refractors, Maksutov and Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. While looking straight through these telescopes produces an upside-down image, with a diagonal mirror or prism you see an upright image, but with the sides reversed! We therefore recommend an Amici prism for all terrestrial observations. They are also a valuable accessory for observing the moon and planets.
This prism can be used on all refractors and Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes with a 1 ¼" connection. In general, all prisms with a 45° viewing angle are particularly useful for moon and planet observations, as these celestial bodies always move along the ecliptic. In Germany, the ecliptic can be found approximately between 15 and 68° above the southern horizon (depending on the observer's latitude, the season and the time of night). When using a 45° prism, a comfortable viewing position with a straight head is therefore always guaranteed.
