275 years ago, on 19 January 1747, Johann Elert Bode was born in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. In the summer of 1772, the 25-year-old mathematician left his hometown and moved to Berlin. There he began an unprecedented career as an astronomer, director of the observatory and author and editor of important astronomical works and journals.
Until his death in November 1825, Bode was one of the leading scientists, achieving fame as the "Berlin Astronomer" and enjoying recognition far beyond the borders of Germany. Bode gained particular significance through his cartography of the sky. The maps in his celestial atlas, Vorstellung der Gestirne(Presentation of the Stars), published in 1782 and 1805, were particularly popular. The 12 hand-coloured constellations in the calendars come from the second edition of this work and will accompany you through 2022 with historical sky maps showing the relevant section of the sky for each month of the year and containing some important explanations.
