Cultural and historical observations and tips for your own observations and photography round off the text.
The fantastic photographs, presented in a generous landscape format, were compiled by Finnish aurora photographer Tom Eklund. From locations in Finland, Norway and Iceland, his camera captured the full splendour of the aurora borealis. He also managed to document some events whose triggers were detected by solar satellites, allowing the sequence of events from the solar flare to the aurora borealis spectacle to be traced.
