For maximum performance, the primary and secondary mirrors of the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope must be precisely adjusted or collimated. This is achieved by adjusting the 3 screws on the secondary mirror housing so that the secondary mirror is rotated on its mounting plate until the image (through the eyepiece) is no longer distorted. Collimation is difficult and often has to be repeated every time the telescope is moved. Unfortunately, collimation with the original screws supplied by the manufacturer can sometimes be a frustrating experience, as you have to work in the dark with an Allen key or Phillips screwdriver while simultaneously screwing and looking through the eyepiece to check the effect of the adjustment. Bob's Knobs simplify collimation by replacing the original screws with knobs.
