The Republic of South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa. Unlike other countries, it has three capital cities: Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. These are the seats of the government, parliament and the Supreme Court of Appeal. The largest city is Johannesburg.
People of all skin colours live together in South Africa – unfortunately not always without conflict. Racial segregation, known as apartheid, has repeatedly led to considerable unrest. One of the most famous personalities is the activist and politician Nelson Mandela, who spent his life fighting against apartheid. In 2010, everyone in South Africa celebrated the Football World Cup together.
South Africa borders Namibia, where many tourists go on tours and safaris, as well as Botswana and Zimbabwe. This map shows all country borders, mountains such as the Mafadi and rivers such as the Orange River. All major cities, the enclaves of Lesotho and Swaziland, and the Cape of Good Hope are also shown.
