The young and highly gifted physics student Stephen Hawking is diagnosed with the devastating nerve disease ALS. Doctors fear that he only has a few years left before he loses control of his body and slowly dies. With the support of his parents, his friends and his girlfriend Jane Wild, he tries to realise his lifelong dream and solve an important astrophysical problem. Together with Roger Penrose, he finally succeeds in providing a general proof of the necessary existence of singularities in Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.
