The Earth seen from space. In addition to what is perhaps the most beautiful photograph of Earth ever taken, the poster shows further detailed images of our planet.
The main image was taken in the southern summer of 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 space probe on its way to the moon. It is one of the few genuine photographic images of the entire Earth, and is the highest resolution and probably the most requested image from NASA. There are several other images showing Australia and the Pacific Ocean, taken by the Galileo space probe. The images taken by Cassini showing South America are of much poorer quality.
There are no genuine photographs of the entire Earth with a view of North America or Europe. What does exist are elaborate but poor fakes, recognisable by the green tones that appear in the land areas.
The continents of Earth are usually barely visible from space because they are mostly covered by clouds, which appear white from space. When land is visible, there are no green tones; the land appears red, dark red and dark blue.
