The Hassi Messaoud 001 meteorite was discovered on 11 March 2020 near the town of El Borma, Algeria. It had a mass of 75 grams and is classified as a nakhlite. Nakhlites are a group of Martian meteorites, named after the first of its kind, the Nakhla meteorite. Nakhlites are igneous rocks rich in augite, formed from basaltic magma around 1.3 billion years ago. They contain augite and olivine crystals.
Their crystallisation age, when compared with crater counts from various regions of Mars, suggests that the Nakhlites originate from the Tharsis, Elysium or Syrtis Major Planum regions of Mars.
