- Fascinating basic knowledge about all satellites in one volume
- An important piece of space history that has had a significant impact on our everyday lives
Sputnik 1 was launched into Earth orbit on 4 October 1957, marking the beginning of space flight. Since then, over 7,000 satellites have been launched. Although many of them burned up harmlessly in the atmosphere at the end of their lives, most of them continue to orbit above our heads as so-called "space debris". Currently, around 800 active satellites are performing a wide variety of tasks in orbit around the Earth. This book sheds light on the incredible diversity of these unmanned spacecraft, without which our modern technological society would be unthinkable.
The author Eugen Reichl was a long-time employee of a major international manufacturer of launch vehicles and space flight propulsion systems. He is the author of numerous highly regarded publications on space flight and space flight history.
