A centring telescope for phase contrast (Bertrand lens) is used to align the various optical components of a microscope more precisely. In particular, it enables observation of the rear focal plane of the objective and its conjugate focal planes. The Bertrand phase telescope or Bertrand phase lens is inserted into the microscope in place of an eyepiece to shift the intermediate image plane to a point where it can be observed.
