The handheld spectroscope
In this easy-to-build instrument, a high-precision transmitted light diffraction grating with 1,000 lines per mm reveals the spectral colours, enabling the investigation of different types of light, from the continuous spectrum of incandescent bodies such as the sun or a light bulb to the line spectra of fluorescent lamps, among other things. The wavelength can be read to an accuracy of approx. 5 nanometres on a brightness-adjustable scale.
