The classic high-voltage generator as a fully functional cardboard kit. Wimshurst machines, invented around 1880, were for a long time the only reliable sources of high voltage, as required for X-ray machines, among other things. Today, they have been artfully restored and are on display in museums such as the Mathematical-Physical Salon in the Dresden Zwinger, and some are even found in school collections, where they enable important experiments on electrical charges.
Electrifying machines of similar design found their way into the salons of the upper classes 200 years ago, where society amused itself with experiments such as the "electric kiss": the gentleman who dared to kiss the charged lady received an immediate shock.
Despite generating up to 70,000 volts, accidental contact with this Wimshurst machine is harmless: the capacity of the two Leyden jars, i.e. the capacitors, is designed to ensure that the strength of the discharges remains well below the limits set by the authorities. A thrilling experience in the truest sense of the word for anyone who has always wanted to let off some steam!
