First Test Under Urban Lighting Conditions

With the sky dark and the stars shining brightly, I head outside. Light pollution is noticeable in this small town, and the constellation Ursa Minor is hard to make out, since stars of magnitudes 4 and 5 are barely visible. But when I use the star-field binoculars, not only are all the main stars of Ursa Minor immediately recognizable, but so are the fainter companion stars of about magnitude 6 or fainter.

Observation under ideal conditions

Away from the lights, out in the field, I first focus on the Big Dipper. The Sternenfeld binoculars can’t take in the entire constellation, but Alcor (the Touchstone) and the double star Mizar are clearly visible and distinct. In every direction, the binoculars reveal as many stars as you’d see under an Alpine sky.

The constellations Cassiopeia, Cygnus, Lyra, Cepheus, Delphinus, and Bootes are fully visible within the field of view. Large portions of Hercules and Perseus are also visible. Impressive objects such as the Andromeda Nebula, the open star clusters h&Chi, and the Lagoon Nebula in Sagittarius are fantastic targets for this “super eye.”

Back the next morning: A new sky awakens

The next morning, at 5:30 a.m., the stars in the winter sky continue to shine brightly. This time, I point the binoculars at the constellation Orion. It fits entirely within the field of view, and the Great Orion Nebula glows with a diffuse, bluish shimmer. The Pleiades and the Hyades in the constellation Taurus also look particularly beautiful. I simply slip the compact binoculars into my pocket. No other astronomical observation instrument is this easy to set up and stow away again.
