Sky Dock: Every Atlas mount has two interfaces to which the telescope/camera module can be attached. This is done simply by snapping it into place without the need for tools. The connection transmits data at up to 3 Gbit/s. Once attached, there is no reason to remove the module again: Atlas is transported and stored fully assembled and is immediately ready for observation.
In addition to the AP 80/360 module with a Sony IMX585 camera, which is available with the launch of atlas, further modules are already in development: one optimised for planetary observation and another featuring a monochrome camera for higher resolution and a wider range of image processing options. Each new module can be clicked onto the same mount and uses the same Gaia mobile app from Vaonis.
Sky Guard: Always keep an eye on the entire sky! Mounted on the mount’s column, a 185° fisheye lens with a Sony IMX676 12 MP sensor films the sky live, from horizon to horizon, and makes stars up to magnitude 6 visible – just as you would see them with the naked eye.
In the Gaia app, this view becomes a real-time sky map: the image is overlaid with constellations, object names and the direction of view of the telescope. Select an object in the Sky Guard view, and atlas automatically aligns itself and begins observing.
The night sky as seen with the naked eye and the telescopic sky are no longer two separate experiences.
Switch at any time between the Sky Guard view and the detailed view from the telescope’s camera. Sky Guard automatically records a time-lapse of the night sky. This allows you to document the atmospheric observing conditions – and no doubt the odd meteor or two!
Optics without compromise: a Petzval-corrected apochromaticdesign with four lenses in three groups (2+1+1), including two fluorophosphate glass elements and one lanthanum glass element.
Across the entire sensor and the entire visible spectrum, the residual colour aberration remains lower than the diffraction blur caused by the 80 mm aperture. In other words: the design no longer imposes any limits – the remaining limitations are of a physical nature: the diffraction inherent in the aperture and the viewing conditions at the observation site. The back-illuminated Sony IMX585 sensor (8.3 MP, 2.9 µm Pixels, 1/1.2" format) is integrated into the module and optimised for this optical system. Native field of view 1.78° × 1.00°, up to 24 MP with CovalENS mosaics, 16-bit FITS export for further processing.
Atlas is an alt-azimuth mount for single exposures of up to 30 seconds. From the first half of 2027, the instrument will support an equatorial mode, which eliminates field rotation and enables longer exposure times.
Take your first image in four simple steps
- Set up the Atlas on the tripod and level the telescope: the accelerometer and the LED ring at the top of the mounting column will help you do this.
- Connect via NFC or the built-in Wi-Fi in just a few seconds.
- Launch the Gaia app (iOS / Android): atlas aligns itself automatically and Sky Guard shows you the entire sky, from horizon to horizon.
- Select your subject in the Sky Guard view: atlas aligns itself, keeps the subject in the telescope’s field of view, focuses and processes the individual images into a composite image (live stacking) – for you and up to ten other connected Smartphones.
Built to last! Atlas is based on a dual aluminium construction. Inside, a die-cast aluminium chassis provides the mechanical rigidity on which the accuracy of alignment and tracking depends; on the outside, a protective dust cover milled from solid aluminium absorbs shocks during transport. Atlas is protected against dust and splashing water in accordance with the IP64 standard and operates at outdoor temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +40 °C: from summer gardens to winter nights at high altitudes.
A sealed USB-C 3.1 port enables 60-watt fast charging and data transfer; an integrated humidity and temperature sensor controls the automatic dew heater; the battery is replaceable; and the internal 32 GB storage can be expanded with microSD cards (16 GB included).
Atlas is a precision instrument whose mount was developed and manufactured in france. It is designed for durability. The manufacturer’s warranty on the mount is 10 years (5 years on the modules).
