What is a Dobson telescope?
A Dobson telescope is a Newtonian reflector telescope suspended in a so-called rocker box. This box replaces the mount and tripod. A Dobson telescope is therefore very simple in design. It does not require an expensive construction, which is not necessary for purely visual observation. For your money, you get a relatively large, high-quality optical system!
A Dobsonian can be easily moved in all directions. This is ensured by height and rotation bearings. The finder and a star chart help you to locate the desired objects via "star hopping". No other telescope design allows you to get to know the sky as thoroughly as a Dobsonian.
Anyone who buys a Dobson has the advantage of quick assembly, as the telescope consists only of the optical tube and the rocker box. Both parts can be combined extremely quickly and you can start observing immediately.
Dobson telescopes are particularly well suited for beginners who want to start with a large telescope for relatively little money. With a little skill, the tube can also be mounted on a parallactic mount, but many amateur astronomers remain loyal to their Dobson for life. The very direct observation of the sky with a Dobson telescope has its own unique charm.
