A Klevtsov Cassegrain is generally regarded as the ideal instrument for those seeking a robust, fully spherical, coma-corrected system with a flat field of view – particularly for high-resolution imaging or planetary observation – and who do not mind a heavier, less ‘plug-and-play’ instrument.
Compared to the more common schmidt-cassegrain telescopes (SCT), the Klevtsov offers the following advantages:
- Excellent field correction: The Kletsov telescope corrects spherical aberration, coma and astigmatism.
- Flatter image field: The design ensures a very flat photographic image field, making it better suited to modern CMOS imaging.
- Higher contrast: The Klevtsov design features less obstruction from the secondary mirror, resulting in better contrast for planetary and lunar observation.
- Fixed primary mirrors: Focusing is achieved via a focuser mounted at the rear end, thereby eliminating the problems associated with focusing using movable primary mirrors.
- Rapid thermal cooling: The open tube design allows for quicker adaptation to ambient temperature, preventing the formation of thermal air currents.
- Less dew formation: As the corrector is smaller and sits deep within the tube, Klevtsov telescopes are less prone to dew formation than the forward-exposed corrector plate of an SCT.
