Very well rounded OTA for advanced users.

( 5 / 5 )

I bought this telescope coming from a 130mm reflector.
I have to say that it is quite a step up from your beginner scope. Even though it is quite heavy it makes up for it with its huge aperture. So far I have only used it for imaging deep sky objects (even though it should work just as great for planetary observations) and due to its very low focal ratio I have been able to see insane details with relatively small exposures. I had no focal problems with my two dslrs (nikon d3200, canon EOS d4000) as the focal point is well within the range of the focuser. Focusing on stars or the surface of the moon is very easy with the precise focus adjustment knob. Coolimating the telescope is a breeze (I'm using a laser coolimator). The adjustment screws for the primary are very easy to turn and they provide very precise tilting of the mirror. The secondary is very easy to adjust as well with the help of a philips screwdriver. Cleaning the mirrors is surprsingly simple as the primary slides out of the back and the spider vane can be removed from the tube entirely. Where I live it is very humid and I haven't noticed any buildup of water droplets in the inside of the tube or the mirrors which is a big plus. The quality of the included accessories took me aback. The finder scope is very robust and the image is very clean as you can even adjust it's focus. I have been able to resolve stars of +9.5 magnitude! The adaptor and the tube extension are very well made and also very useful because the extension is necessary for using eyepiecies. Last but not least, this telescope comes with a cooling fan which is crucial for maintaining a steady focus. The battery pack that runs the fan requires x8 AA batteries and I usualy get 3-4 uses without recharging.
To sum up this telescope gets everything right when it comes to its price range. I personaly selected this scope because I love astrophotography and also love observing planets and just couldnt be bothered buying two telescopes. It's low focal lenght allows it to get a decent zoom at prime focus, ideal for nebulae and galaxies and its large aperture is essential for getting high magnifications to observe details on planets and the moon. Truly a great choice for all-round astronomy.
